Tile roofs are beautiful and long lasting, but every once in a while, you may find that there are minor issues that require tile roof repair. Here are seven important things you need to know:
1. Repair Is Cheaper
In most cases, if the damage to your roof is minor, a repair will cost significantly less than replacing a section or all of your tile roof.
2. Matching Tiles is Tricky
Because tile roofs can last for decades (even centuries!), there are many types of tile out there, and getting the right match can be tricky. That’s why it’s always better to have a professional look at your roof repair.
3. It’s Better to Replace Tiles
In some cases, replacing tiles may not be possible (if the right tile can’t be found), however, it’s almost always better to replace one or two tiles than it is to repair cracked tiles. A good roofing company can do both though.
4. Tiled Roofs are Usually Boarded
Unlike metal sheeting and other roof types, tiles are very heavy, which means they are installed on a boarded substrate. Sometimes, tile roof repair consists of repairing this substrate and the tile itself.
5. New Tiles May Not be a Color Match
Even when you use the same tile, from the same color range, there’s a good chance your new tile won’t be an exact color match with the old. This is because all roofs fade over time, and your new tiles won’t have been exposed to the elements. The color will fade over time, however, and the new tiles will start blending into the old.
6. Roof Tiling is a Skilled Trade
Many people think that they can replace or repair damaged tiles themselves. However, this is not recommended as a DIY project. Tile roof repair requires a high level of skill, and you could do more damage than good if you attempt it yourself.
7. It May Be Your Ridge Capping To Blame
If you need a tile roof repair because of a leak, it may not be your tile at all. Often, leaks are due to improperly waterproofed ridges.
